“You can be a victim of your life or the victor…In order to help yourself you have to be yourself.” -Dave Pelzer

Everyone used to joke that Samantha LaRue should write a book about her crazy, wild experiences. She finally decided it was time. When LaRue sat down to write, the words came fast, most of the first eight chapters in just a few sittings. By the end of the week, she had nearly 20,000 words, despite having little formal writing experience. The talent and the urgency were undeniable. Our hope is for this story to reach exactly who it was meant for.

“Rampart Street is for survivors. Kids who grew up faster than they should have. Taking on more than a child ever should. Sam captures the inner world of a resilient girl with such compassion that I found myself pausing just to breathe. This book is not only beautifully written, it’s necessary.”

“Few memoirs manage to be unflinchingly truthful, but Rampart Street accomplishes exactly that. LaRue’s storytelling is specific to her without losing its emotional core or value. Every chapter feels like stepping into an experience that is truthful yet witty. This is a masterful debut from a writer with a rare, resonant voice. This story brings humor to dark times.”

“Rampart Street is one of the most honest portrayals of childhood survival I’ve encountered. Samantha writes with a clarity that is both devastating and deeply healing. As a trauma therapist, I see stories like this every day but rarely do they find language this gripping, this tender, and this brave. This memoir will stay with me for a long time.”
